Happy Birthday Australian Wine Review
Forgive me for the self indulgence, but by my estimate this week marks the 2nd birthday of this website and I think this makes for a good excuse to celebrate.
2 years is hardly a long time in the world of wine, but it does give me a reason to look back at some of my original posts and have a laugh at my crap grammar and rash conclusions.
It also reminds me why I started this site in the first place, which was essentially to serve as a space where I could publish all my tasting notes before I forget/lost them and then access them easily. This was particularly important given my habit to scrawl tasting notes/random thoughts on whatever is handy - serviettes, order forms, a piece of bark, the envelope from a parking ticket (true) etc.
Fast forward 2 years and my tasting notes still live in scrappy notebooks and random bits of paper (until I am organised enough to transfer them online) but the whole setting and motivation has changed.
What has kept me going, and something I didn't count on, was the discovery - through the intractions on here - of a whole tribe of wine wankers (just like me), professional or amateur, who similarly got home every night, opened a bottle of wine and then wrote about what happened next.
From an outsiders perspective, the whole idea of 'blogging' is still viewed as an outlet for vainglorious amateurs and one eyed fools (and there is plenty of both out there, some might even think I fit in there). Yet I can say with confidence that some of the best entertainment, information and interesting opinions can be found on blogs/blog style websites and (notably) the comments/interactions found on these 'web-logs'
I can only hope that this little website is one of them....

2009/10 WCA Wine Journalism 'Young Gun; Wine Judge; Gourmet Traveller WINE and Breathe Hunter Valley magazine contributor; LattéLife columnist; National Liquor News Tasting Panellist, WBM Coolest Wine Tweeter of 2010 and Riesling lover who fell into the liquor industry chiefly to buy cheap beer.

Congratulations on the milestone, many more to come I am sure.
ReplyDeleteCongrats and keep it up! Always appreciate your entertaining, informative look at a wide range of wines.

ReplyDeleteWell done Andrew, I always look our for your posts on my RSS reader.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for the kind words!
ReplyDeleteI am deeply offended at being called a "wine wanker" ... even if it is true.
ReplyDeleteCongrats.
