Both come off ideally sited old vines and produced by talented makers. Both wineries top reds - a Cab blend and a straight Cab respectively - I would put up as more than worthy competitors for equivalent Bordeaux blends at a mere fraction of the price.

In fact Stuart Watson, producer of Woodlands, holds a large tasting every year comparing top Margaret River with top Cabs from around the world, and consistently his own wine, along with many of his neighbours tend generally to fare very well in the blind comparative tastings.

Thank you for this post; clearly a great tasting a...

Thank you for this post; clearly a great tasting and interesting/engaging notes on your part. I am excited that someone is importing the Pauillac of Chateau Latour into Australia (ie their 3rd wine); I had been looking high and low for this one in Australia and, unless they've really upped the price (and hopefully they haven't being pre 05), it's usually not that far off "Les Forts de Latour" at half the price. Would be v interested to know your Margaret River bordeaux blend substitutes, as I haven't tasted through a lot of those. Well done for speaking out.
I managed to taste a barrel sample of the '08 Rothschild a few weeks ago, looked a little sappy and green, certainly still within itself. These wines amazingly, show very little evidence of 100% new oak. Maybe this is one reason for their longevity?
Its good to see Stanton and Killeen moving in the right direction, I would expect them to gain in popularity very quickly.
I am having pea and ham soup tonight with lashings of formic acid!
Rauri
