Bindi Original Vineyard Pinot Noir 2009

Another wine lauded heavily in the newly released 2011 SMH/Age Good Wine Guide, this is typically a very smart wine. This is no exception, though I’m not absolutely in love.

It’s very brightly coloured in the glass though, with a pink/purple brightness that had me thinking of rhubarb. Nose is all stewed plum alongside more fresh plum, with sweet red pure Pinot juice escaping. It’s a very proper, if still bound, nose, with plenty of pure fresh cranberry fruit. The palate is also still very bound, but for mine it’s a tad roasted and warm, finishing with dry but light tannins. I like the redcurrant generosity on the palate but it just doesn’t quite taste world class as yet. A little stewed. Love that mid palate sweetness though. Very good stuff, if just a little off the Bindi best. 17.8/92

(I use inklpay in lieu of a paywall. A small tip goes a long way to finally paying for hosting!)

I tasted this at the Langton's tasting and had similar thoughts. It was nice, but just not the same quality or appeal of for example the 08 Original, which I loved. 09 a tough vintage I would have thought

Interesting. Maybe a case of trying too hard after expectations have grown so much?

I'm just not sure what happened here. Vintage not quite as amazing as hoped?

Michael Dhillon from Bindi here.

Give this wine five years. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
Trying too hard would imply some changes in the vineyard or winery. Same fastidious work in the vines in 2009, missed the heat as we hadn't veraised, and the wine was not macerated more, worked any harder nor was any extra new oak added. Very unambitious winemaking really!
Thanks for your comments and interest in our wines. It''s realy appreciated.

Thanks Michael! Glad to have you on here.

I'm not really doubting the quality here, it just needs some time. That being said, what are your favourite vintages of recent years? There seems to be quite a bit of enthusiasm surrounding the 2010 vintage down there…

At 18 I started working in a small suburban bottleshop, largely to buy cheap beer. It was my first year of university, doing a degree that I didn't really like, and a liquor shop seemed like fun. Needless to say I discovered wine, my uni degree morphed into something completely different and wine/beer took over my life.

Almost twenty years later and I currently spend my days wearing many (wine) hats, mostly as a writer, presenter and marketer.

While wearing my writer cap I write features for the likes of National Liquor News, Gourmet Traveller WINE and the RAS plus I'm a Lifestyle FOOD channel wine expert. Read more about me here or get in touch to book your next wine event with me here.
