Chapel Hill Il Vescovo White 2012 (McLaren Vale, SA)
13%, Screwcap, $20
Source: Sample
A bitsa of a blend incorporating Verdelho Savagnin and Roussanne, this is, like many a bitsa dog, quite endearing – sure it may never actually roll over on command (not many wines do) but for a simple, textural white it’s actually more than handy.
What I found interesting is just how much the Roussane really comes through here – red apples in abundance. Likey. Otherwise it’s plenty of soft tropical peach and, just like the back label suggests, plenty of nectarine. Plump and juicy, the back end cleaned up with judicious phenolics and just enough acidity, this is better made and more attractive than many similar priced straight varietals. Good ‘drinking’ white wine.
Drink: 2013-2014
Score: 16.5/20, 88/100
Would I buy it? Probably not a bottle proposition, but I wouldn’t say no to a chilled glass on a warm afternoon.
