Hither & Yon Aglianico 2013

June 13, 2015

Hither & Yon Aglianico 2013

Of all the new generation Mediterranean red grapes to come our way, I’ve got to pick Aglianico as one of my favourites. Sagrantino I like too, for that matter. Too get this much structure and flavour at 12.6% alcohol suggests that Aglianico might like it in McLaren Vale too. Now we just need an Aussie shortening for it (like Rizza for Riesling). How about Agli?

Bright plum red; the nose has a soft red fruit fragrance – there’s a reference on the back label to ‘pink marshmallow’ which I think is great. Sappy, dry palate is framed with tannins – bitter, mouth-cleansing, proper tannins. Complement that with some cherry red fruit late juiciness and you’ve got frankly one utterly delicious, dry and savoury red. Those tannins are perhaps just a little too bitter, but gee it makes for a refreshing and vital one.

Massive yes. Drink 2015-2025+. 18/20, 93/100

Details: 12.6%, Screwcap, $27, Sample
Would I buy it? Yes. I’d need something meaty, but I’d smash a half bottle.

  • About me – Andrew Graham

At 18 I started working in a small suburban bottleshop, largely to buy cheap beer. It was my first year of university, doing a degree that I didn't really like, and a liquor shop seemed like fun. Needless to say I discovered wine, my uni degree morphed into something completely different and wine/beer took over my life.

Almost twenty years later and I currently spend my days wearing many (wine) hats, mostly as a writer, presenter and marketer.

While wearing my writer cap I write features for the likes of National Liquor News, Gourmet Traveller WINE and the RAS plus I'm a Lifestyle FOOD channel wine expert. Read more about me here or get in touch to book your next wine event with me here.
