Thomas Wines DJV Hunter Valley Shiraz 2013
I’ve been critical of DJV previously, but this seems the best balanced release in some time.
A blend of Hunter Shiraz (from the alluvial soils of the Trevena vineyard) with Semillon verjuice. Crucially, it avoids the weird citrus and stonefruit of previous vintages.
Bright, light purple mauve, this wins out with its earthy, lighter style – it’s very much a classic Hunter Burgundy style, with medium weight, a grippy finish and a very savoury profile.
I like the angles here – it’s unquestionably going to live for a long time.
Details: 12.8%, Screwcap, $30
Tasted: May 2015 (sample)
Best drinking: 2015-2030+
Score: 17.7/20, 92/100
Would I buy it? I think I would. Not for drinking now, but I’d like to see this in a decade
