Thomas Wines Sweetwater Shiraz 2013

July 9, 2015

Thomas Wines Sweetwater Shiraz 2013

Power of suggestion perhaps, but this is typically one juicy, sweet-fruited wine, especially in light of the other more classically earthen Thomas Wines Shiraz. The longer you look, however, the more I think this might be the best of Thommo’s 13 Shiraz line (other than Kiss).

Bright purple red, it’s laden with sweet berry fruit – very soft and squishy fruit with creamy oak – over a black earth edged palate a tight, high acid finish. Luscious fruit and very youthful, that juiciness initially is too much, but then you realise just how youthful it is – it basically tastes like a barrel sample. After a day open it looks even more classical, the savouriness picking up pace considerably.

Quality fruit and quality style. Too young by half, but lots of appeal. Will be even better in 2 years time.

Details: 14%, Screwcap, $35
Tasted: May 2015 (sample)
Best drinking: 2017-2030
Score: 17.6/20, 92/100
Would I buy it? I’d share a bottle

  • About me – Andrew Graham

At 18 I started working in a small suburban bottleshop, largely to buy cheap beer. It was my first year of university, doing a degree that I didn't really like, and a liquor shop seemed like fun. Needless to say I discovered wine, my uni degree morphed into something completely different and wine/beer took over my life.

Almost twenty years later and I currently spend my days wearing many (wine) hats, mostly as a writer, presenter and marketer.

While wearing my writer cap I write features for the likes of National Liquor News, Gourmet Traveller WINE and the RAS plus I'm a Lifestyle FOOD channel wine expert. Read more about me here or get in touch to book your next wine event with me here.
