What are you buying this July?

July 15, 2016

What are you buying this July?

It’s that time again.

Following on from this article back in May, I’m keen to know what you’re buying (or at least considering buying) this July.

My motivation here is simple – I am living vicariously through you all, as I’m not meant to be buying any wine. None. Well, I did err this month, with a selection of ’14 William Fevre 1er Cru Chablis now on their way.

Woops.

What about you? What wine (and beer – give me your beer recommendations too) are you eyeing off (on the shelf or in your cellar).

(I use inklpay in lieu of a paywall. A small tip goes a long way to finally paying for hosting!)

Wendouree of course, if you’re lucky enough to be listed. 2015 Yarra anything. SA Grenache, surprisingly sometimes made like Grenache and not oak infected Australian red wine. More 2010 Barolo if I can find it and afford it, unlike 2014 Burgundy which I can’t. Chablis excepted – 2014 Billaud Simon in particular. Any credit card limit left, more 2013/4 Great Western Shiraz. Bests, Story, Jamsheed and Fallen Giants all so good, savoury and hinting at the fruit sweetness in years to come.

Good to read the more frequent posts these days.

Cheers.

From memory only the Shiraz has increased to $60. Rest still $45 and $55 as last year. Hope you’re restrained only in buying not drinking. Dry July? Not even sure what AFD stands for.

I force myself to have two AFD per week. Usually Sunday and Monday. Makes Tuesday exciting.

Fantastic Clare Valley Shiraz and great value at under $40. The style is exactly what I like in an Australian Shiraz, dark fruits, chocolate, tobacco and a long finish.

I would be interested to see what you think.

Just picked up some 2013 ashbrook estate chardonnay and some 2001 yarra yarra – the yarra yarra cabernets.

Next week will be some dog point section 94.

Mostly “natural” wines from France, Adelaide Hills & central Victoria to satisfy my increasing curiosity & interest in them. Pinots from Tasmania eg Chatto, Sailor Seeks Horse, 2 Tonne. Marius from McLaren, a few odds and sods from Orange to see what winemakers are doing with some organic & biodynamic grapes as that’s where I expect to source some grapes from in V17 to continue my winemaking adventure.

Got home last night went for a glass of Oatmeal Stout and the keg was empty. Will have to go down and get some Riverside Brewing Co Beer. The 777 IIPA and the Othellos Curse about 9%. They are my favorites just have to be a bit careful otherwise you nurse a next day headache 🙂

Quiet July for me this year. Wendouree Cab Malb, Cab Sav and S.Mataro. I believe prices are the same as last year from what I’ve read. My order form is yet to arrive.

For me:
Wendouree
Serrat
Benevelli Piero Langhe 2015
produttori Del barbaresco 2012
A couple of bottles of 2010 Barolo
A few random bottles of Chablis and Montrachet at auction
Marius
Yangarra High sands and ceramic egg Grenache
A mix of Hunter Reds from 09,11,13 and 14. De Iuliis Stevens, Mt Pleasant Rosehill, old Paddock, Tyrrell’s Johnno’s and an 09 4 Acres.
A few cheap odds and ends.

By god I’ve gone overboard lately.

Just a single bottle of Jean Noel Gagnard La Boudriotte Premier Cru 2011. Bought at auction for about $44 as a complete punt. I definitely want to expand my collection to include more French Chardonnay.

I also bought 2 x Jean Marc Pillot Les vergers 2008 for around $50-$55ish. I’ve been on the lookout for that producer since reading your review of the 2013 I think it was? Unsure if the 2008 is up to that standard but thought it was worth a shot. Fingers crossed.

And got a couple of bottles of 2014 Christophe Et fils Montee De Tonnere. Unfortunately i was dissapointed by the 2014 Chablis ($40) or so. Quite insipid I thought. Like mineral water and a squeeze of lemon, i kept searching but never found the flavour.

Good choice. The Jean Noel Gagnard should be very good (and a relative bargain).

I feel like a bit of a hick after reading what everyone else is buying but anyway:

Southern Bay Brewing Vanilla Oatmeal Stout
Humis Vineyard Carmenere-Petit Verdot (if they have any left)
Boree Lane Chardonnay from Orange
Langmeil 2015 High Road Chardonnay

and not that you asked about spirits but also the Plantation Pineapple Rum Stiggins Fancy…

Haha ! It’s a blend of an aged rum infused with pineapple flesh and a white rum steeped with pineapple skin and then redistilled. Had it at Lobo Plantation in the city a bit over a week ago. An outstanding sipping rum although I suspect many would use it for cocktails. The pineapple is certainly there but it is not in any way overly sweet or cloying, it seamlessly blends with the flavours of the aged rum.

2015 Giant Steps (Primavera and Lusatia Pinots)
2015 Primo Estate Sangiovese
2015 Bondar Grenahce

2010 Oliver’s Taranga Sagrantino
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
2013 Jamsheed Beechworth Syrah
2015 Maude Pinot Noir
That seems like a lot. There’s probably more, but it can’t be healthy to list anything further.

I’m trying to work out what I’m actually going to spend on, but the shortlist is:

2015 Giant Steps Applejack PN
2015 Giant Steps Lusatia PN + Chard
2012 PdB Barbaresco
2012 Vietti Castiglione
2012 Lambert Nebbiolo (I found some back vintages!)
2015 Head Red Shiraz
2015 Cantermerle (halves!)
2015 Serrat SV

And maybe some 2014 Hunter Shiraz if I can find something I like.

… more than I can afford, so I’m going to have to do some trimming.

Andrew,
I am hoping “what I am seriously considering to buy” also qualifies for a post…..but I require some assistance in evaluating the proposal.
A 1999 magnum of Yalumba the signature is being offered by a local retail outlet. I am a little hesitant that it has made the journey
Pros.
– quality retail outlet
-no probs in them accepting a return
– my favourite blend
-reasonable price
-magnums generally develop slower than 750 ml bottle
Cons
-as stated ,may not have made the journey
-determining provenance
-Was a good year not a great year
-some online research tends to suggest that the ideal drinking window was 5 years ago?
– I’d be pissed off if it’s suffering from tired wine syndrome (my fav. Blend after all)

Your thoughts please

Colin R

    What is the price Colin?

I quite like Signature, and 1999 is a vintage I’m also a fan of.

Though you’re right, the provenance question is the biggie – unless it has been out of direct light and in temp. control I’d be somewhat hesitant.

= ended up buying those 2014 Te Mata Coleraines you mentioned last month. Partly on your recommendation and part reviews looked too good. Tasted the Awatea last week which was very nice, considering getting that as well.
= Wendouree’s
= 2013 RWT

Now to just calm down and not buy for a while

I’m a little late to the party, but hopefully some Wendouree, Blue Poles Cab Franc and Allouran, I had a solid June too with some 2011 Voyager Cab/Merlot at a good price, 2012 Fraser Gallop Partarre and some Howard Park reisling. I really need to stop for a while now. None of that was planned in May.

On the beer front, Pirate Life Golden Era, Bad Shepherd Hazelnut Brown and Moondog Black Lung VI (aged in starward whisky barrels this year).

I’ve pretty much doubled the WA wine in my cellar over the past couple of months. As I said, it wasn’t really planned, but I guess you could say it was righting a wrong.

Pirate Life IPA was last month for me . They have partially taken over their distribution company last week as continue to grow with speed.
