Inkwell Dub Style No. 5 Remix Shiraz Grenache 2014
I’ve not been well over the past week, and typically after a few days off I always get excited about that first wine. Overexcited, even. I thought that might be the case with this bargain red, but I kept coming back and, duly, it kept delivering.
The Dub Style range is Dudley & Irina from Inkwell’s second label (of sorts). I say second, but the quality isn’t second tier, instead the style aims to more approachable, and the fruit comes from other growers.
This is a blend of McLaren Vale Shiraz and Grenache and nails the brief. Vibrant red fruits, flicks of chocolate, meaty bits and then a thickness through the middle before a solid, satisfying finish. Sure it’s plump, but not un-serious. There’s tannin chew and breadth. Presence and conviction. Ignore the price tag as this is a $35 red in a $20 body. Best drinking: 2016-2024. 18/20, 93/100. 14.3%, $20. Would I buy it? Absolutely.
