Alkoomi Blackbutt 2010
Blackbutt is Alkoomi’s top red, and always released with plenty of age under it’s belt. How’s this for precision – the exact blend on the back label is given to one decimal place! No rounding up at Alkoomi HQ. It’s 79.6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.6% Malbec, 4.7% Cabernet Franc and 1.1% Merlot.
Also, despite the seven years of bottle age this still has a little purple. Promising. Indeed this is probably in an odd phase and needs more time to look really good. There’s a mint/eucalypt meets meaty beefiness on the nose, the mid-weight palate just a bit muddled, stuck between minty/cassis early stages and something more regal and rounded. The tannins suggest this should come good with more bottle time, but at the moment it’s just not quite delivering the real enjoyment. Hold. Best drinking: 2020-2020. 16.8/20, 89/100+. 13.6%, $62. Would I buy it? Not yet.

I’m sorry, but does anyone really care what the exact percentages are? If it’s good it’s good, bugger the proportions.
Ha! I know. Interesting to see the focus on getting it exactly right though.
Just bought a bottle of the 2010 Blackbutt as a Dan’s “under wraps” special for $29.90 – a pleasant surprise when I opened the mystery box! It’s airing now and will wash down a nice wagyu steak while we watch the MasterChef Grande Finale tonight. Looking forward to seeing how it shapes up with 3 more years under its belt and 6 hours of oxygen to wake up all those hidden talents.
