The name is quite a mouthful. But this Schild Estate Edgar Schild Old Bush Vine Reserve Grenache 2018 is just approachable and easy.
Bright, ripe and glossy mod. Grenache. All mid palate fruit that tends a little jubey and confected but has a lovely generosity to it that is immediately appealing. Wines like this are such good advertisements for Barossa Grenache. Good stuff, if not quite the complexity for really high marks. Best drinking: now to ten years. 17.5/20, 91/100. 14.5%, $36. Would I buy it? A glass or two.

Schild Estate doesn’t interest me anymore, not since their attempt to cheat the public with a fake wine. Once bitten …..
I’d forgotten all about that. Must be a decade ago now. Sadly, not the first time I’ve heard it done either…
Yes, it was a while ago. They probably learnt their lesson so I really shouldn’t be judging them now, and akin to parole they ought to be allowed to get out of “wine jail” with good behaviour. If I remember it correctly they scored big in the US with a high score back in the day when Australian Shiraz was in fashion and they pretty much sold out. So they put together some wine and started bottling. This was some months after their initial release. unfortunately for them someone prominent in the wine trade happened to be at the bottling facility and thought it odd. I can’t be sure but I believe it was a winemaker with the initials MT.
