In the same vein as the superb Cabernet comes this commanding Balgownie Estate Old Vine Shiraz 2015.
Much like the Cab too, this comes from 12 rows of the oldest plantings that are now over fifty years old. This isn’t as interesting as the Old Vine Cabernet for mine, as it just ramps up the volume knob too. Although it is a concentrated and rather classic expression of Balgownie Shiraz.
Molasses, plum, rum and raisin, the warm palate driven by very ripe fruit and supporting oak, the finish a bit breathy but unquestioned in its quality. I find this just a little warm to be great, despite the obvious power. The score is a nod to both camps.
Balgownie Estate Old Vine Shiraz 2015. Best drinking: now to at least another fifteen years. 18/20, 93/100. 14.8%, $100. Balgownie website. Would I buy it? Cab please.
