Shaw & Smith’s Adelaide Hills Sauv is now in its 32nd vintage! Solid innings that. Its popularity continues too, despite all sorts of contenders including Marlborough Sauv, local Pinot Gris, shitty unwooded Chardonnay (from anywhere), Verdelho, and all the other fleeting trends. This Shaw + Smith Sauvignon Blanc 2021 is a strong release too.
Handpicked fruit has always been a hallmark here, reflecting the attention to detail that flows across the whole Shaw & Smith empire. There is also a contained generosity, with green melon, some sort of tropical fruit, and crisp – but not harsh – acidity. Maybe less grassy and ‘typical’ than some years, and feels better for it. It’s not a complex wine, but doesn’t pretend too – it’s just a good drink.
The S + S Sauv legacy continues…
Best drinking: now. 17.7/20, 92/100. 12%, $29.90. Shaw & Smith website. Would I buy it? Well worth a bottle.
