Open up the wine fridge and crack out the Amex statement – I want to know what beer and wine have you been buying (and drinking) this October 2021?
The buying pace has slowed a little this month, but I did pick up some Domaine Collier Blanc this week, which I’ve been meaning to do for an age. Also, some Roger Coulon 2012, because Christmas is coming and Champagne is necessary, plus some Vina Somoza Godella (which comes with a must-buy tip. I’ll report back).
Also on my ‘buy’ list is some 2019 Clonakilla Syrah, plus the lure of 2017 Massolino Barolo.
Meanwhile, there is some of the new Capital Brewing x Mountain Culture West Coast NEIPA in the post popping up this week which looks promising. I’m super keen to hear of any West Coast IPA you’ve been enjoying to add to my list (the pictured Bracket Brewing WCIPA was a recent highlight).

Gone long on Burn Cottage 2019 Pinot, really enjoying the top 2019 CO Pinots…
Coal Pit is a new CO producer i’m enjoying – good pinot but also a dam fine take on barrel aged Sav B
Haven’t checked in on the 2019 Burn Cottage wines, but the quality tangent in recent years has been large. Nice!

Packaging alone looks ace, let alone the story. The Barossa CAN be cool!
Last two wine purchases were the Atallah Chardonnay from Orange and Nick Spencer Gruner Veltliner from Tumbarumba. Last beer purchased was the Canadian Alligator Buffet Hazy IPA from the excellent Little Bang Brewing.

Been buying – a bit of Chardonnay and Chenin heading into Summer – Savaterre, Tapanappa, Corymbia in my case.
Been drinking some quirky stuff – Flowstone Moonmilk White, this crazy Savagnin, Viognier etc blend and Flowstone’s Cabernet Touriga (the spice is real even at 6 years old)
I like the Flowstone wines a lot. Cabernet especially so.

Yeah, Flowstone seems an underappreciated gem. Pretty reasonable prices directly from the winery with free shipping at the moment surprisingly!
Frost Dodger Riesling 2021 , Wittman Estate Riesling 2019, Adelina Arneis and some Faively Clos du Roy 2019 before I can’t afford it anymore – probably next year! And Yalumba Vine Vale Grenache 2017 which is an adult complex, savoury rendition and not just frooty wine drink.
We’re closely aligned here Tony. I’ve actually sold most of my Burgundy now as I just can’t bear the disappointments. I’d rather buy local/NZ Pinot instead.
I couldn’t resist 1 dozen of the Leo Buring Clare Valley Riesling 2021. 2 trophies in the Adelaide Wine show (including best Riesling and white wine of show) and 2 trophies in the Clare Valley Wine Show (best riesling and best wine of show) for around $16 pb. Yet to try.
Then an email came in yesterday with the Cherubino Chardonnay – 2021 Wine Show of WA – 3 x TROPHIES (Best Wine of the Show, Best White Wine of the Show, Best Chardonnay) & Gold Medal and 2021 Royal Adelaide Wine Show – 2 x TROPHIES (Best Chardonnay & Best White of the Show) & Gold Medal. Just 2 bottles in a mixed 6 (along with 2 Domaine Naturaliste Artus and 2 Rieslingfreak No. 2.
A recent standout was the Corymbia Rocket’s Vineyard Tempranillo Malbec 2020. Corymbia sell taht and the chenin in a 2 pack which is brilliant.
$16pb for the Leo Buring Riesling is a steal. That brand has been forgotten.
Turkey Flat Grenache and Rose – both perfect for the warming days (even in Melbourne).
Tripe Iscariot Chenin Blanc – definitely worth another go (Saffer winemaker in Margaret River).
Dominique Portet Rose – always amongst best of the Yarra.
San Giorgio Ugolforte Brunello di Montalcino is something I will definitely look for again
Good rosé is so underrated.
Vivera and Frank Cornelissen. Based on price the Vivera stacks up well. I probably need to try a few more to understand the nuances a bit more.
The 100% Carricante from Vivera was a stand out I thought.
Spent a few hours with Hughsie (Mewstone) at his new tasting room back in May before it officially opened. Has a broad range of products – tasted something like 17 wines from memory. Riesling and Pinot are stand outs for me.
Ah yes, the ever mercurial Cornelissen. Haven’t had any Vivera though – will put on my list.
Is it Godella or Godello and what is it relationship to Gouveio and Verdelho. I’ve never really worked it out 100%, even Spanish and Portuguese seem to have differing opinions.
Often very steely and lean which I like – ever had an aged One?
I think they’re the same thing – like Tempranillo where everywhere calls it a different Tinto. I’ll dig out my grape book at home and check. Good Godello is fab – a most underrated grape that I drank a bit of in Galicia.
I didn’t realise how cool climate it is in the far north west corner until I tried the wines
World Wine Estates – Juliette is very helpful.
i’m drinking ’11 and ’12 LB Riesling right now. Just the right amount kerosene on the nose

Loving the reviews; enlightening as always!
Wine wise, I’m sitting now enjoying a 2011 Craggy Range Gimblett Gravels Single Vineyard Syrah which is a nice savoury (euro) style with black pepper and lighter berry notes. The oak is now integrated and the wine is absolutely ready to rock. (Read – I LOVE screwcap!!)
Beer wise, I drank Stewart Brewing Hazy IPA on the weekend. Delicious piny flavours, on a lighter malt backbone. The addition of a few oats to give it some creamy haze.
John Dickson – Burn Cottage 2019. Prince offering it $68 pb in six packs. Seems good price?
Richard I suspect that’s the Moonlight Race from Burn Cottage, not their top-end Pinot? If it’s the top-end gear, $68 is a steal.
Arnaud Baiilot Borgogne ’19. well like you Andrew, I have ditched buying Burgundy for some time. But tried this, and for the price, a steal.
There is value in the Bourgogne/village land. Especially in less fancy villages. Mostly, Beaujolais is better and cheaper
Trying hard to not buy anything. Pulled out of Tyrrell’s after many years, and only ordered a Syrah, a SV and a magnum of SV from Clonakilla… and then wouldn’t you know it, we had dinner with my folks on Sunday night and they cracked a Clonakilla Viognier 2008 and it was absolutely superb. My white wine of the year so far.
