There isn’t much Grenache planted in the Yarra, which makes this Boat O’Craigo Kincardine Grenache 2020 a bit of an outlier. I still maintain that Grenache needs more heat than the Yarra can typically give. But let’s call this exhibit a) for why broad generalisations like that are dumb.
Sourced from the Kangaroo Ground end of the Yarra which is the warmer end of the Yarra. This feels ripe enough too, with silken palate flowing with quite fragrant red fruit, cinnamon, dried beef and something ferrous in amongst the red fruit. It feels quite effortless really, even if the big punch of ripe fruit you’d expect doesn’t hit. Likeable, in a Pinot/Grenache lovechild mode.
Best drinking: nowish. 17.7/20, 92/100. 13.8%, $38. Boat O’Craigo website. Would I buy it? A glass or two.
