I love how Boat O’Craigo rolls off the tongue. So phonetic. This Boat O’Craigo Black Spur Chardonnay 2021 isn’t quite as easy flowing, but we’ll get to that.
Also, expect a few Chardonnay reviews on site this week.
I’m not super taken by the freshen it up with early picking/build it up with reductive winemaking mode on this Black Spur Chardonnay, but hey, it’s crisp. Despite the low alcohol, this still has peach skin ripe fruit, plenty of funk, then crisp and tight with a little grip to finish. Pleasant, crisp, mod-Yarra style of light and bright Chardonnay. I want a second gear, but it’s approachable drinking.
Best drinking: over the next few years. No hurry, but it’s not going to get much better. 17.5/20, 91/100. 12.8%, $35. Boat O’Craigo website. Would I buy it? A glass.

Nice review, Andrew. Would this be a good one for a non Chardy drinker?
(One who likes the classic qualities of Chablis, at a pinch, but describes most Aussie Chardonnay as ‘sweaty fruit’?)
Definitely fits for a non-Chardonnay drinker. Lees oak, more freshness, more white peach, no butterscotch.
