These single block Curly Flat Pinot Noir releases are entertaining dives into Macedon Ranges terroir expressions aren’t they? I like different blocks every year too, just for more spice.
Speaking of spice, this 2020 release is a bony number, even if it’s one of the riper wines in the ’20 Curly single block range.
Great colour – dark ruby maroon. Promising. There is all sorts of things going on too – twigs, cinnamon, raspberry pastille, something woody. There is red fruit at the heart of the palate too, but a quintessentially leaner wine for Curly. Is it too lean? That’s the lingering question. I love the tension, and the quality is assured – gold medal wine. But would it be a top gold medal wine with half a baume more ripeness?
Best drinking: hard to tell. It’s good now, but maybe better in a year or so. 18.5/20, 94/100. 13.2%, $58. Curly Flat website. Would I buy it? Sure would.
