It’s not hard to appreciate this Tim Smith Wines Eden Valley Riesling 2022
Single vineyard Eden Valley Riesling ‘picked on a full moon for those that follow those sort of things’, it couldn’t taste any purer, any more bracing and fresh and lively. A fresh mountain stream at the beginning of summer, but in wine form. Lime juice, celery, grapefruit, lemon, some sort of blossom too. Yes, it’s acid formed, but rightly so. It’s natural acidity too, with the telltale softer shape.
What really pushes this to top gold territory is the intensity. It’s a full fruit punch in your mouth – no leanness, just latent, grapefruit/lime power and a long, long finish. Tingles with this lip-smacking lime vitality. What a wine. I will always admit to a soft spot for limey, intense, super dry Eden Riesling, but when it comes with enough generosity and flavour to be immediately delicious? And it’s $30 a bottle? I’m jumping up and down about it.
Best drinking: I like this style within the first 9 odd months of release or come back after four years. 18.7/20, 95/100. 12%, $30. Tim Smith Wines website. Would I buy it? Absolutely.
