It’s that time again. Time to fill me in on what you’re currently drinking, what you want to drink, or what you have drunk in the last four weeks. And not just wine but beer, spirits, cider, and RTDs. Tell me all of it.
This month, I’m hanging out for an allocation of 2021 Kumeu Mates Chardonnay as a start, which is on my perpetual buy list. I should probably start hunting more Primo Joseph Sparkling Red for Xmas too. Oh, and I’m also seriously tempted by the 2020 GGs from Wittmann on the subject of Christmas refreshments…
There hasn’t been much ‘drinking’ this month, but I did enjoy the Mountain Culture Black Daddy Black IPA for a wintery beer hit and have been emptying the Hawker’s West Coast IPA cans at speed. I couldn’t handle the 10% Mountain Culture Nerves of Steel macrodosing beast, though (pictured above), as it felt like a smack in the face (and a hangover waiting to happen).
I’m also judging at the ANZBWS from tomorrow, with the promise of a judges dinner in the eve. What will I take from the wine fridge? Ideally, it should be something no one will ever guess so I can win options games…
What about you? What have you been buying/drinking?

Still on the stouts and porters while it’s still cool enough. The One Drop Chocolate & Vanilla Porter and Brick Lane Revolver Vanilla Porter are the standouts.
Recent buys
2021 Izway Three Brians Grenache – only 300 bottles from 1901 vines.
2014 Greywacke Chardonnay Library release
2021 Coates Reserve Chardonnay
Don’t forget World Grenache Day on Friday, will be supping on Merum Desti ’18, Clarendon Hills ’12 and Simian CDP Les Grandes Grenachieres ’10.
Happy Drinking!
Don’t worry, I have a decent Grenache ready to go for Friday too 🙂
Bought – yarra cabernet, marson grazia (great priced white blend), and bacchus (red and whitw)
Drank- the two ’19 Marli Russell blebds were a real highlight, elegance and ripeness but lower abvs than I’m used to seeing in rhone blends. Really beautiful, charming wines. Oh and Chatto Marion’s Pinot Noir 2020 and Castagna ’17/’18 nebbiolo both elegant and refreshing drops.
I haven’t had a Castagna red in ages. Now there’s a strong label with a quieter presence in recent years.
Their pricing can be tricky tbf and they should do more promotional events. Not the biggest fan of their Syrah variations but the Italian reds are lovely and very much their own thing too. The nebbiolo was more of an Alpine style while Domenica down the road can be more robust and tannic, quite the contrast!
Partida Creus Vinel-Lo 2020 – a beautiful light elegant red with no additives of any sort and sustainably grown..
Le Canon d’Achille 2020. Cab Sav (12%) as it should be. Some residual CO2, fragrant, full of energy and very red fruited. (from the Ardeche)
Limus Riesling, think it was a 2020. Fantastic as always, a totally different and to my taste so much better rendition than most acid bomb Aussie Rieslings. This is how we should use that grape in Australia.
Tyrrells 1995 Shiraz Merlot Bin Vat 55. Cork as dry as a you know what. Totally f%^ked. Back to the wine shop it goes.
Assorted other bits and pieces, mostly French, mostly a bit bretty. Think I’m getting a bit sensitive to brett.
A reasonable number of IPA’s from various place.
I’ve not had one of the Limus Riesling but heard much about – a bit of skin contact too I think?
I’ve been enjoying the Bling IPA by Bridge Road Brewers. Solid drop!

Hi Andrew
Best drinking this month:
2012 Wynn’s Black Label Cab Sav
2013 Hewitson Mad Hatter Shiraz (I’ve been following your Hewitson reviews with interest)
2014 Moppity Estate ‘Estate” Cab Sav
2014 Red Robin Reserve Riesling
Purchases:
2018 Chain of Ponds ‘The Cachet’ Shiraz Cabernet
2020 Jilyara Williams Block Cab Sav
My Grenache Day wine will most likely be 2013 Clarendon Hills ‘Clarendon’ which should be perfectly in the drinking window.
Big fan of the 2012 Black Label. Would be in the zone now too.
Just bought Giant Steps Applejack ‘21 Pinot, ‘21 Farr Rising Gemayel and some delicious Phillippe Fourrier champagne.
Awaiting Mount Mary allocation (Quintet and Pinot Noir), latest Seville releases and Deep Woods Reserve Cab Sauv should be arriving soon too.
How much is the Quintet off the mailing list now?
Why autocorrect does not like Gamay???
Had 2013 Black Label Shiraz recently and was not blown away🤔
Not surprised either. The Cab is great, the Shiraz is a step behind.
Being a Kiwi, the Kumeu River is a go, the Estate is great value and I have my Mates 2021 safely tucked away. A partner in crime is a big fan of the Sorrenberg Chardonnay, had the 2019 a few nights ago and was disappointed, preferred the Wantirna 2018. Tonight a Riorret 2018 Pinot is smashable. Off the beers at the mo but a big fan of the Daintons.
$139 for both Quintet and Pinot Noir
