New Years Wines, Beers 2020-2021 Edition
This didn't feel like a normal NYE. But with a toddler, what counts a 'normal' NYE anyway? More importantly, who cares about New Years? Regardless, I opened plenty of tasty drinks …

Another wine from the Malakoff Vineyard, and fascinating to see the results in context of the other Malakoff-sourced wines recently. Classy wine this Vino Intrepido Spanna in the Works Nebbiolo …
Fascinating wines in this Susuro range. They don't always work, but modern style and swagger. This is Pyrenees Nebbiolo from the Malakoff Vineyard, with plenty of glacé cherry varietal charisma, …
Ambitious Nebbiolo from the Willoughby Bridge Vineyard. Spends 54 days on skins and 16 months in barrel. Light coppery red, the nose is quite floral, if tinged with brick dust …
It's halfway through spring. Already. That escalated quickly... As the name suggests, these are the best pink/blush/salmon orange/reddish coloured Australian rosé to pass the Australian Wine Review tasting bench this springtime. …
Another successful release, with this Longview Nebbiolo Saturnus 2018 another solid varietal Aus Nebb. Glossy red raspberry kirsch fruit, fine tannins. Might need a bit more tannic drive to be sublime …
Energetic nouveau style King Valley red. This Pizzini La Volpe Nebbiolo 2018 has bright raspberry fruit and light tannins, the delivery unadulterated by oak, the overall effect so energetic. Even …
Not all wines can be great. Plenty are just ok drinks. And some are just bad. Here then is a selection of wines that almost made it over the past few …
Longview Nebbiolo Saturnus 2017So much of our contemporary Nebbiolo benchmarks are based on Barolo and Barbaresco. Much like Pinot Noir to Burgundy or Assyrtiko to Santorini, this is what we …
Massolino Vigna Rionda Barolo 2013 On Monday I was banging on about the beauty of the 'standard' Massolino Barolo. Here is its older, more famous, and utterly delicious brother. The Vigna Rionda …
Massolino Barolo 2015 Want to know what the Barolo fuss is about? Why people go nuts about Nebbiolo? Here's one wine that shows the beauty of what Jancis Robinson describes as 'the world's …
Pizzini Estate Nebbiolo 2014 Pizzini's range of Nebbiolo has exploded in recent years, and headed by quality varietal wines like this. It's good. It's real and, importantly, varietal. Close your eyes and …
There are few more blue chip names in Australian wine than Steve Pannell (aka S.C. Pannell). Son of Moss Wood founders Bill and Sandra Pannell, Steve is the only winemaker in …
The quest for great Australian Nebbiolo continues. I always think it's unfair to compare wines like this Yarra red to Langhe Nebb, but that's the reality of a $50 pricepoint. This …
Welcome to tranche 2 of the #MonthofAndrew wines. I probably haven't hit the cellar as hard this birthday with the imminent baby arrival (just over two weeks until due date), but …
The premise with this collection is very very simple - I've been hitting the sample pile hard over the past week or two, and these 30 wines were not only …
Christmas is my favourite time of year. The smell of gardenias. The sun. The green grass. The promise of holidays. It's so good. This time of year is also perfect for …
From solid drinks to faulty train wrecks (and everything in between), the Almost Club is for wines that didn't hit the Australian Wine Review 'recommended' mark (17/20, 90/100) in August …
For the final post in my 'wines that moved me in April' series comes this final collection - that I'm calling the 'better reds that aren't Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz or …
Pizzini La Volpe Nebbiolo 2014 Tangy, light bodied King Valley Nebbiolo with easy appeal. Hints of mint, a liberal dose of Neb brickdust and light cherry flavours. I like the varietal …
At 18, I started working in a small suburban bottleshop, largely to buy cheap beer. It was my first year of university, slogging through physics and chemistry, so a liquor shop seemed like fun. Needless to say, I discovered wine, and my life evolved with a unique dual focus - wine and environment.
Twenty years later and I spend my days wearing many (wine) hats, mostly as a writer, presenter and marketer.
I now judge at wine shows around the world, sit on the Australian Wine List of the Year awards panel and was once a Wine Journalism Young Gun (but baby that was years ago).
Currently, I write features for a variety of publications including National Liquor News, Gourmet Traveller WINE and the RAS, plus I'm a former Lifestyle FOOD channel wine expert.
In 2019 and 2020 I was voted in the Top 30 Best Wine Critics in The World, and in my spare time, I'm a sucker for punishment and run trail ultra marathons, much to the delight of my long-suffering family. Read more about me here or get in touch to book your next wine event with me here
